* "The Iu Mien people are a Southeast Asian subset of the Yao people, a minority group originally from China. Displaced by the Vietnam War, many settled in the United States from the late 1970s to the mid 1990s. From China, the Iu Mien migrated to Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. They speak the Iu Mien language." -Wikipedia

Meet the Artist/ Designer

Ah Sou Saechao was born in Chiang Rai, Thailand. He is of Iu Mien ancestry and is the youngest of six children with three older sisters and two older brothers. At the age of six, his family was sponsored to move to Oakland, California. Ah Sou has always had a passion for arts. Being the youngest, he got all the hand-me-downs and learned to be creative in altering and putting different garments together to create an outfit.

As part of his Senior Project in Cal State East Bay, Ah Sou decided to transformed trash bags into dresses. He created twenty dresses and each dress showcases their body shapes, flares, and personalities. He created a portfolio of all the dresses and held his very own first Fashion Show and art gallery showing in Oakland, California.

After dubbing the “designer” status, Ah Sou was determined to reflect and give back to the Iu Mien community. With the support and faith of his family and friends, he designed his first IU MIEN t-shirt design in 2011. He presented it to his friends and family and received fair amount of reaction and compliments. He continued to produce his first batch of shirts with over 100+ unit. Fortunately, all was sold within weeks. As of today, Ah Sou continues to construct new designs and produce new garments by incorporating the unique embroidery of Iu Mien culture.

Ah Sou's designs were inspired by unifying two cultures, the intricate embroidery pattern of Iu Mien arts and the western culture.
